Sarita Sonalkar, MD, MPH

Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Sarita Sonalkar is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Co-Director of the Fellowship in Family Planning at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania, and medical school at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of California - Los Angeles, and her Family Planning Fellowship and Masters in Public Health at Boston University.

Dr. Sonalkar’s research interests span broadly in family planning, including postpartum and post-abortion contraception, implementation of postpartum family planning and HIV prevention programmatic interventions. Dr. Sonalkar works as a consultant for the World Health Organization Department of Reproductive Health and Research. Her current projects include WHO and NIH-supported research to evaluate a postpartum contraception mobile health intervention in Accra, Ghana.
