"Vacant lots are abandoned parcels of urban land that signal blight, with overgrown vegetation, trash dumping, and other illegal activities. Exposure to these lots is associated with negative health outcomes. Although complex social and economic factors broadly explain the relationship between neighborhood blight and health, limited experimentation with biological outcomes has been conducted in real-world settings" Penn MSHP alumna, Eugenia South's work on the effects of urban blight on mental health among city dwellers, was recently featured on NPR. Mitesh Patel, Director of the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit and Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI), has won the Society of General Internal Medicine Outstanding Junior Investigator of the Year Award. The award was announced at SGIM's annual meeting. The annual honor recognizes a junior investigator "whose early career achievements and overall body of work to date have had national impact on generalist research." Patel's research on the use of digital technologies and wireless and wearable devices for biometric monitoring and data collection have drawn international attention. Two years ago, he oversaw the effort to launch the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit, the world's first behavioral economics research unit of its kind established inside a health system.
